helping to overcome this gap. The ‘bottom up’ or genetic approach to studying speciation has hunted down genes responsible for premating and postmating isolation, and then shown that the gene sequences exhibit signatures of recent selection. But this approach has told us little about the nature of that selection. Is selection divergent or has divergence occurred under uniform selection? Was selection in response to environmental differences? Was it natural or sexual selection? Finally, we still know little about how mate preferences evolve within and between populations during the process of speciation. Sexual selection by mate choice might be a near-universal process in speciation, but what drives the divergence of mate preferences to begin with? Speciation study is in the midst of a surge of research effort, and part of the reason is that answers to many of these questions appear at last to be within reach. We expect that a combination of phenotypic and genetic approaches will soon close the gap between the genes and the mechanisms of selection, and yield a fuller account of how most species in nature have formed.

Extremes, plasticity, and invariance in vertebrate life history traits: insights from coral reef fishes.
Life history theory predicts a range of directional generic responses in life history traits with increasing organism size. Among these are the relationships between size and longevity, mortality, growth rate, timing of maturity, and lifetime reproductive output. Spanning three orders of magnitude in size, coral reef fishes provide an ecologically diverse and species-rich vertebrate assemblage ...
متن کاملSpatial and temporal distribution of larvae of coral reef fishes in northern Red Sea, Egypt
The larval community of coral reef fishes in the Red Sea was studied in coastal and offshore sites to determine the effects of the exposure to waves and currents and the distance from the shore in structuring the larval fish community. Plankton sampling from inshore and offshore sites and the exposed and sheltered sides of the reefs resulted in the collection of 2048 larvae representing 49 diff...

متن کاملArtificial Coral Reefs as a Method of Coral Reef Fish Conservation
2 Biodiversity is an important factor in all healthy ecosystems. Coral reef ecosystems support an incredibly diverse community of fish species. As coral reefs are in decline due to a combination of factors such as climate change and over fishing, the species which are being supported by the reef are at risk. In particular, coral reef fish communities have been shown to be in decline. Coral reef...
متن کاملBiodiversity and distribution patterns of coral reef ecosystems in ROPME Sea Area (Inner part: Persian Gulf -Iranian waters)
The Persian Gulf is northern part of the ROPME Sea Area (RSA), and is semi-enclosed shallow sea which located in subtropical climate. Measuring is 1000km in length, varying in width 60-340km, and average depth is about 35m and maximum depth is 105m. This research was carried out during 2005-2010 for reviewing the corals status and determination of coral reef habitats distribution in the Persian...
